Kiln Firing Protocol
Thank you for choosing our studio for your ceramic work. To ensure safe, successful firings and fair access for all members, please adhere to the following guidelines. Failure to comply may result in your pieces not being fired.
1. Proper Labeling
- Every piece must be labeled with something to identify it as yours. Please label the shelf with the intended firing type (e.g., bisque or glaze).
- Unlabeled, mislabeled, or damaged work will not be loaded into the kiln.
2. Bone-Dry Requirement for Bisque Firing
- Only fully bone-dry pieces may be loaded for bisque firing.
- Wet, damp, or leather-hard clay will notbe accepted—risk of explosion damages the kiln and others work.
- Allow sufficient drying time (typically 7–14 days, depending on size and humidity).
3. Glaze Application Standards
- Glaze must be applied evenly and appropriately for the clay body and firing temperature.
- Leave the bottom completely unglazedwith a minimum ¼-inch (6 mm) clearancebetween glaze and the base to prevent sticking to shelves.
- Remove any glaze drips from the bottom using a damp sponge before drying.
- Poorly glazed, runny, or contaminated pieces will not be fired.
4. Clay Source Policy
- Only clay purchased from our studiomay be fired in our kilns.
- Outside clay (including recycled or personal supplies) is prohibited due to unknown composition, contaminants, and firing inconsistencies.
Additional Notes
- Kiln Loading: Submit pieces during designated drop-off times. Studio staff reserve the right to reject any piece that poses a safety risk.
- Firing Schedules: Check the posted schedule for bisque and glaze firing dates. Late submissions may miss the cycle.
- Liability: The studio is not responsible for cracking, warping, or glaze defects due to improper preparation. Follow best practices and test new glazes on small pieces first.
- Questions? Contact studio staff before submission for guidance on drying, glazing, or compatibility.
By following these protocols, you help keep our kilns running smoothly and safely for everyone. Happy firing!
